A Courtly Masque/Mask
In high school we read Othello and in my first year of university we read The Tempest. I remember being told at some point that I wasn't too bad at English considering it was my second language. That comment really annoyed me, as if being a migrant made you incapable of grasping Shakespeare. I have always loved books and reading in English and in Spanish. The Tempest was one that stuck in my mind, my favourite characters are Ariel and Caliban. I memorised Prospero's Speech and not only because it was set to beautiful music by Loreena McKennitt in her Mask and the Mirror album. The works below are my own visual representation of the characters using offcuts from mono prints and collaborative paintings made together with my young son Tomas. The collages are deliberate attempts to evolve beyond the traditional Anglo-British representation of these characters.
